I recently put out a call in my Instagram stories for people to share some of their favourite sweater patterns for larger bellies and softer curves - I wanted to find some patterns that were roomier and more inviting for different bodies, including my own, because we all deserve to enjoy a handknit sweater!
Here are some of my favourites of the patterns that people shared with me!
Newleaf by Jennifer Steingass
This pattern goes up to a 59” finished size with a recommendation of 2-6 inch positive ease. I love the beautiful colourwork on the neckline and sleeves - it could be so subtle or bold depending on your colour choices! The pattern includes options for short or long sleeves and is knit top-down, seamlessly in the round with a simple rolled neckline. It includes a beginner-friendly chart for the colourwork and is suitable for knitters of all experience levels.
Easy Eyelet Yoke Sweater by Knitatude / Chantal Miyagishima
This sweater goes up to a 54” bust. Pattern doesn’t have to be colourful! The eyelet details on this sweater create a lovely design detail for knitters who would prefer a solid colour sweater. Knit top-down, in the round, and seamless; it’s most suitable for an advanced beginner.
Boxy by Joji Locatelli
This pattern goes up to a 54” bust but has lots of positive ease and will fit larger bust sizes comfortably. Choose your fit based on the upper arm size. A simple modern knit, this sweater can be knit either seamlessly in the round or seamed and worked back and forth (the sleeves and neckline are seamlessly worked in the round for both variations). Knit with a lightweight yarn, this boxy pattern is a drapey, flattering fit.
True Friend by Veera Välimäki
This stripey sweater goes up to a 60.5” finished size with a recommendation of 9 inches positive ease. This pattern is completely seamless and knit top-down. The striping creates a dramatic but flattering effect!
Breathing Space by Veera Välimäki
This asymmetrical sweater goes up to a 58” finished size with 0 ease recommended and offers a lot of comfortable space and movement. It is worked top down with a raglan yoke and is of average difficulty.
Love Note by tincanknits
A quick knit from top-down, this pattern goes up to 72.5” with 4-12 inches of positive ease! It features a beautiful lace pattern along the neck, a high-low hem, and two options for length. It’s a lovely choice for a cropped sweater to pop on over a dress or tunic!
