Learn to dye - Class 1: hand painting
Please note: Dye Classes will take a brief hiatus over the summer months. If you have a group of friends who want to take a class together in July or August please email me to inquire.
After you check-out I will send you an email asking for your yarn and dye colour choices (yarn: Basic Sock, Classic DK, Classic Worsted. Colours: you may use up to five colours just let me know what you like!).
If you are registering yourself and one or more friends, you may update your quantity of people attending in your cart.
This in-person class is a hands on introduction to hand painting yarn at the Allison Barnes Yarn home studio.
We will begin with the fun! Dyeing!
Upon entering the dye studio you will see your work station set up with your prepped yarn, pre-mixed dyes, and your tools. I will demonstrate a few techniques to apply the dye to your yarn then give you time to create your masterpieces because hand dyeing yarn is a true form of art and self expression! In this class you will have time to dye two skeins of yarn of your choice.
Once you have finished applying the dye to your yarn we will wrap them up and steam set them. During this time we will have an opportunity to go over the basics of how to make dye stock, how to dilute dye stock, how to get the colour to set permanently, and how to make repeatable colours. Steam setting can take up to an hour so bring some knitting or crocheting and we can relax in the living room and chat while we wait.
At the end of the class you will get to take home your two dyed skeins of yarn that will still be warm from steaming. On your way out you will get a bag to carry your wet yarn and a wool wash sample to finish rinsing and washing your yarn at home with instructions for drying and basic care.
Class length: ~2 hours
Class size: 4 to 6 students
Classes will run some Saturday evenings, some Sunday afternoons, and some weekday daytimes between 10-2, depending on availability.
Cost: $100 per person plus GST.
